Jane Lim, LICSW, LCSW

Washington D.C. is rich in history, culture, and endless activities, which can sometimes feel overwhelming. It’s like standing in front of the cereal aisle, faced with so many choices that it’s hard to pick just one. But getting out and engaging in the vibrant energy of the city is a great way to lift your spirits and create meaningful connections. Whether you’re looking to unwind or have some fun, I’ve compiled a list of some of my favorite activities in D.C. to help inspire your self-care routine, boost your mood, and make those important connections. I hope this helps!

1. Explore Historical Landmarks and Museums

You can’t live in D.C. without visiting its iconic landmarks and museums. While I won’t spend too much time on this (since it’s likely already on your to-do list), a walk along the National Mall is a must. From the Lincoln Memorial to the Washington Monument, there’s something healing about immersing yourself in history. The free Smithsonian museums are perfect for learning something new, all while practicing mindfulness. It’s a wonderful way to get outside and enjoy the rich culture D.C. has to offer.

2. Enjoy Activities by the Water

D.C. has some amazing water-based activities that are perfect for winding down and de-stressing. Whether it’s kayaking or paddleboarding on the Potomac River, or simply strolling around the Tidal Basin (especially stunning during the Cherry Blossom season in March-April), there are plenty of ways to enjoy the water. Don’t miss the Georgetown Waterfront Park or the Wharf—both are ideal for relaxing, enjoying great food, and soaking in the beautiful views.

3. Attend a D.C. Sports Event

If you’re into sports, D.C. is home to a variety of teams across different sports, including baseballbasketballhockey, and soccer. Whether you’re cheering for the Washington Nationals or the Washington Capitals, attending a game can be a fun way to get out and enjoy some local excitement. Sports events can also be great social opportunities, so grab some friends and enjoy the pre- and post-game activities!

4. Indulge in D.C.’s Diverse Cuisines

One of the best parts of living in D.C. is the city’s diverse food scene. From Ethiopian to KoreanMediterranean to Indian, the variety of cuisines here will definitely satisfy any craving. D.C. is home to several Michelin-starred restaurants and hidden gems offering a broad range of flavors. Make sure to check out food blogs or Instagram accounts for recommendations and plan your next food adventure!

5. Join a Local Yoga or Workout Class

If you’re looking for a mental boost and a chance to connect with others, D.C. has countless yoga studios and fitness classes. It’s a great way to get moving, meet new people, and try something different. If you’re into trying different classes, consider using ClassPass, which allows you to explore different studios and find one where you feel at home. And for the ultimate feel-good Sunday morning, head to one of D.C.’s Puppies & Yoga studios (located in Georgetown and Dupont)—what’s better than doing yoga with adorable puppies?

6. Get Your Creative Juices Flowing

D.C. embraces both the arts and performing arts scene, making it a fantastic city to tap into your creative side. Whether you’re joining a clay pottery or weaving class, or trying something more adventurous like glassblowing, there are endless opportunities to express yourself artistically. Additionally, the city offers an array of performing arts events such as Broadway showslocal theatercomedy shows, and concerts. Engaging with your creativity can be an amazing way to boost your mood, reduce stress, and enhance overall wellness.
